Stimulant Medication Shortages

Stimulant Medication Shortages

Written By

At Mind Align Psychiatry, under the guidance of Dr. Danish, we're addressing the current stimulant shortage, which is impacting many patients nationwide. This shortage stems from the DEA's annual limits on stimulant production, a measure aimed at reducing potential abuse following the opioid epidemic.

  • In recent years, particularly 2022 and 2023, these limits have led to shortages of medications like Adderall, Concerta and Focalin, affecting both their immediate and extended-release forms.
  • Despite these challenges, we have successfully managed to provide alternative medications for our patients. Many pharmaceutical companies have introduced equivalent medications with the same active ingredients. For example, instead of Adderall XR, we are often prescribing Adzenys, which a majority of our patients find preferable. Likewise, Aztarys is used as an alternative to Focalin Extended Release, and Cotempla for Concerta or methylphenidate LA, both receiving positive feedback from our patients.
  • Currently, there is no direct substitute for immediate-release Adderall. However, we've found that short-acting versions of Methylphenidate, like Ritalin, are helpful for some patients.
  • In addition to stimulants, we also focus on non-stimulant medications to treat ADHD. While stimulants are effective, they can have side effects for some patients.
  • Our alternative treatments include medications like Wellbutrin, Guanfacine, Clonidine, Armodafinil, Atomoxetine, and Amantadine. We also explore the benefits of supplements such as Saffron, magnesium, Omega-3 fatty acids, and caffeine.
  • For those interested in learning more about these alternatives and other treatments we offer, we encourage you to contact Mind Align Psychiatry. Our goal is to ensure that every patient continues to receive effective care, even amidst medication shortages.
